Growing Papayas in Greenhouses
from:It has been found that usually, the production of papayas is undertaken in greenhouses only during the winter time. It is in winter that new seedlings of papaya are sown. Even cuttings can be used for planting. Actually, harvest can be undertaken thrice in a year. In some cases, you can harvest within a matter of sixty days. You can, of course, get a winter harvest in your greenhouse.
In order to be able to produce papayas all year through in your greenhouse, its two growth cycles need to be kept in mind. When the papaya plant germinates it turns into a vegetative state. At this moment, it will need all the light that it can possibly get. Hence, there is no need to remove the lighting. The process of photosynthesis takes place constantly in papayas. It only stops when there is no light available. So, constant light should be provided in order to ensure that the papaya plant grows faster.
When the plant reaches a height of about twelve to eighteen inches, it can be made to start the process of flowering. In order to force the papaya plant to start flowering the night time should be elongated. This process has to be undertaken artificially. After the papaya plant has begun the process of flowering it can be moved outside. When it has been planted outside, flowering will take place better due to the winter that is approaching. But when the season of winter does arrive, the papaya plant will have to be moved into the greenhouse again. When flowering takes place within the greenhouse itself, make two individual areas. In one area flowering can take place and in the other fruiting can take place. In certain cases, dark periods of time are necessary for the papaya plant to start flowering and for the fruits to appear.
The amount of food that is given to papayas is extremely essential in its growth. Food that contains a very high level of P is considered adequate. When the first flowering occurs, nutrient should be given to the papaya plant. These nutrients can be given while watering the plants. Such are the conditions and requirements for growing papayas in greenhouse. If these are followed well, growing papayas in your own greenhouse can, no doubt, prove to be highly satisfying.
