Growing Exotic Fruits in Greenhouses
from:There are a number of exotic fruits available in the market. These include pomegranates, mangoes, pepinos, litchis, huckleberries, naranjillas, lemonade berry, gooseberries, passiflora, etc. Some of these can be grown in greenhouses. All of these require specific conditions for their growth. Some information about these conditions is given below.
First, let’s consider the process of planting the seeds of these exotic fruits. The seeds of pomegranate should be soaked in lukewarm water for about two whole days. In the case of lemonade berry and passiflora, they should be soaked in lukewarm water only for a day. The quality of the seeds should, undoubtedly, be good. General purpose compost can be used for sowing these seeds. Vermiculite can be used in the form of covering for the seeds. The trays used for sowing should preferably be deep. Or the seeds can even be sown in separate pots. Seeds may not germinate if the compost dries up very soon. So, maintain the moisture well.
A plastic film can be used in order to cover up the pot or the tray that is used in order to reduce the supply of water. Temperature of about twenty five degree Celsius should be maintained. Germination occurs better in a warmer room. Do not place the seeds where there is direct sunlight received. Fungicide that contains diluted copper can be used. When the seeds have begun to sprout, maintain regular supply of water. If water remains in the soil, then rotting may occur. When fruits begin to appear feeding of exotic fruits should be undertaken. Fertilizer having a high degree of potash should be used. Feeding should be done every fifteen days. To improve resistance to disease seaweed extract should be added to water.
The appearance of leaves indicates that the plants ought to be put in individual pots. The water draining capacity of these pots must be good. Some fruits need to be planted deeper each time as there are surface feeding roots that appear often. After proper growth, they can be planted outside. But care will need to be taken for the process of planting outside. The plants should be adapted to the climate prevailing outside. Lemonade berries need to be grown in greenhouses for two years before they are placed outdoors. A greenhouse devoid of frost will be beneficial for pomegranates and naranjillas. Thus, exotic fruits can be grown in greenhouses.
