Growing Asparagus in Greenhouses

from:

Have you ever thought of growing asparagus in your own greenhouse? If you haven’t then do give it a thought. If you hadn’t grown asparagus because you didn’t know how to, then this article will help you as lot to know the procedure of growing asparagus. So, just glance ahead and get ready to grow asparagus in your greenhouse!!!

Hybrid asparagus is very expensive. Due to this, growers usually decide to grow the asparagus seeds in the greenhouse. Here germination takes place in flats. The seedlings are allowed to grow for about ten to twelve weeks before being placed in fields. It is better to buy seeds that have high rate of germination. Be sure to separate out the seeds of small asparagus from other seeds. The small ones don’t yield much. In order to prevent roots from rotting, treat the seeds first. Treatment can be done by using bleach. The seeds should be planted in a soil mix that has been sterilized. Cornell mix could be useful. You should take care about the depth at which you plant seeds. When germination occurs, the asparagus roots become big. Make sure that there is adequate covering given to the seeds.

The way in which the seeds are placed is crucial. It is below the seed that the roots of asparagus begin to grow. So, depth should be maximum. The use of foam tray should be avoided due to the invasive mature of roots of asparagus. It is better to use trays that have a large volume. A temperature of seventy five to eighty five degree Fahrenheit should be maintained during the day time. At night, a temperature of about seventy degrees Fahrenheit would be optimum. This will aid germination. After, the growths of seedlings to about one or two inches, reduce the temperature by five to ten degrees Fahrenheit. In order to grow a sturdy plant, the relative humidity of the greenhouse will have to be brought down.

The fertilizer that is used for feeding the young plants could be water soluble. By restricting the amount of water and fertilizer, the plants can be hardened. A gentle spray can be used for irrigation. Iron sulphate or iron chelate can be used to overcome iron deficiency. Insecticide should be used. With these tips in mind, you are ready to grow asparagus in your greenhouse.
