The reason for this is you have to know how long deep the bonsai pot has to be – if you buy a bonsai pot that’s not deep enough you’ll damage the tree’s roots and probably kill it. If you’re planning on planting more than one tree in a bonsai pot, pick one that is long and shallow, so the trees aren’t crowded. Crowding the bonsai trees will also damage them and most likely kill them.
There are more aesthetic choices to make as well. Pick a pot that compliments your bonsai tree and the flowers it may eventually grow. If you’re planning on using a bonsai tree in contests, remember that younger trees favor bonsai pots that are mutely colored and older ones look great with more earth tones.
