Good Tips For Buying Bonsai Pots

from:

Bonsai trees need pots to grow. There are countless types of bonsai pots available out there, though, so how do you pick the right one? Should you just go with one that looks the prettiest or one that’s cheap? Does the size of bonsai pots matter? Before you go out and buy a bonsai pot, you should know the answers to all these questions.

First Rule Of Thumb

You can find bonsai pots that are glazed or unglazed. They come in various materials like mica, plastic or ceramic. Some are made by hand and some are manufactured. Bonsai pots can even be homemade if you wish. You can use earth ware bowls or dishes as long as you drill proper holes so that the pot can drain properly. The most important thing to remember is: if you’re just starting out raising a bonsai tree, you shouldn’t worry about finding a permanent pot for it to call home. You will most likely end up having to switch bonsai pots anyway, and if you keep your bonsai tree in the pot just because you like the pot, you’ll end up damaging the tree and it will probably die! So if you’ve got a baby bonsai tree, don’t pick out a pot you’ll get attached to – it’s a waste of time and money and will only end up causing problems down the road.

Picking A Pot

When you’re picking out a good bonsai pot for your older bonsai tree, there are definitely some rules you should follow. First, make sure you know how long the bonsai tree’s trunk is. The reason for this is you have to know how long deep the bonsai pot has to be – if you buy a bonsai pot that’s not deep enough you’ll damage the tree’s roots and probably kill it. If you’re planning on planting more than one tree in a bonsai pot, pick one that is long and shallow, so the trees aren’t crowded. Crowding the bonsai trees will also damage them and most likely kill them.

There are more aesthetic choices to make as well. Pick a pot that compliments your bonsai tree and the flowers it may eventually grow. If you’re planning on using a bonsai tree in contests, remember that younger trees favor bonsai pots that are mutely colored and older ones look great with more earth tones.

Picking out a bonsai pot should take a bit of time if you want to get it right and make your bonsai tree look great.
