Basics Of Bonsai Care

from:

Bonsai trees are a joy to behold. Many people like to have one in their home but the maintenance of such a tree may stop them from doing so. Bonsai care is quite rigid and may be more regular thank what some people believe. There are basics to bonsai care which need to be constantly done in order to keep the tree in good condition and for the sake of aesthetics.

Repotting The Bonsai

Repotting is basically done every year or two in the bonsai tree’s life. This is one of the bonsai care basics which should not be left out. This form of bonsai care requires the gardener to change the bonsai plant’s soil and cut off some of the less important roots in order to keep the plant’s growth in check as well as to untangle the root ball for better absorption of water and nutrients.

Pruning, Trimming And Cutting

These actions are quite important in maintaining the looks of the bonsai tree. Basic bonsai care includes these among many others to help the bonsai tree keep its shape and design. Pruning new growth to keep the basic shape of the bonsai is usually done as soon as the growth comes out while deadwood pruning is usually one around the middle of the fall season. While there are some tools used for bonsai care pruning, finger pruning is also encouraged for a more natural appearance of the pruned areas. It is easy to do by holding on to the growth that one desires to pinch and giving it a sharp twist to cut it off.

Pruning with the use of the scissor tip is also included in bonsai care basics and is used for particular kinds of trees. Maples, cotoneaster and some elms do well with scissor tip pruning instead of finger pruning as bonsai care basics.

Watering And Feeding

Bonsai care states that the need for water for some bonsai trees is dependent on what kind of trees one has. While many trees appreciate daily watering, some do not. The soils may be one of the best ways to see if the tree needs to be watered or not. If it is still moist from the last watering then it is safe to say that it does not need to be watered as yet. Dry soil may be an indication that your plant needs bonsai care in the form of watering. Some bonsai care experts believe in feeding fertilizer to the bonsai as often as every three months while others do not recommend a feeding as long as the bonsai has access to water and good soil.
