Bonsai Soil: Getting The Mix Right Is Most Important

from:

When it comes to growing Bonsai plants the most hotly debated topic that you will need to learn more about is ensuring having the correct Bonsai soil composition. The simplest option for you in this regard is to simply buy pre-mixed soils that is available at any nursery and even at most garden centers though this option is also more costly which is why many people are motivated to do their own mixing. Of course, they will need to know about the proper ingredients that must be mixed together and which kind of mix you end up using is often a matter of personal choice while a beginner will of course find it very difficult to get the mix right.

Not Much Soil Required

However, a Bonsai does not require a lot of Bonsai soil in which to grow and as long as the plant is given sufficient amount of water and nutrient and even gases you are assured that your Bonsai will grow well in any kind of Bonsai soil. The quality of this soil of course affects how well or poorly the Bonsai grows and in fact a vast majority of poor Bonsais are those that have been grown in poor Bonsai soil.

To get the Bonsai soil composition right you need to therefore ensure including the required ingredients that among other things must include anything that helps to retain water and which promotes proper drainage as well as which provides proper aeration. To obtain all these features it pays to check out Bonsai soil that is particle based and which includes inorganic matter (properly structured) that promotes good water drainage and which also helps to aerate the soil.

On the other hand, compacted and organic Bonsai soil that is not well structured will not be able to provide proper aeration and the drainage too will be poor – all of which will lead to the roots fading away and the tree will easily rot and die. Without a doubt the right Bonsai soil must be free draining and must also have proper water retention abilities.

However, different kinds of Bonsais require their own particular types of Bonsai soil and so for Junipers and Pines there is need to use soil that does not need much water and this means that the soil need not have high water retention abilities.

On the other hand species of Bonsai that are of the flowering and also fruiting type will need higher water retention abilities and so the soil mix must have the ability to retain water and also allow for proper drainage. Finally, you need to also choose between organic soil mixes and inorganic mixes.
