Buying The Right Bonsai Tools

from:

When you are starting out in the world of bonsai you will soon realize that there are certain bonsai tools you will need. You won’t need a whole toolbox but there are definitely some things that you will need to have handy when starting this wonderful hobby. As you get more expert at training your plants you will obviously narrow down what you really need and what you would like to add to your collection of tools.

Concave Cutters

When you are training your plants you will be doing a lot of trimming and pruning. It is important to use the right bonsai tools for this. Using the right tools minimizes scarring and makes your work easier. One of the tools that can come in very handy for cutting off branches is a concave cutter. You will see these are very common bonsai tools.

You might want to invest a little when buying these cutters. You want concave cutters that are sharp and that will not need replacing or repairing after a year or two. If you intend to take up bonsai seriously then look for cutters that have been made in Japan.

Root Cutters

Root cutters are specialized bonsai tools used to trim the roots of your plants. This is a very important tool when it comes to shaping and keeping your bonsai to the right size. Some plants may need root trimming more than others. So check if this is something that you need.

Branch Benders

If you are training some of your bonsai to grow in a certain way or style then your bonsai tools will not be complete without some branch benders. There are a variety of lengths of branch benders out there; you can choose the right one depending on what you need to do.

Caring For Tools

Besides choosing the right bonsai tools you also need to make sure you are taking good care of your tools. You don’t want your brand new tools to become rusty and dull. Look for cleaning oil such as Triflow to keep your tools clean and good as new. After working on your bonsai you should make sure that your bonsai tools are cleaned up.

Sap should be cleaned off with soapy water. You can also use bamboo to remove some of the tougher stains on your tools. Rust is a bad thing for your bonsai tools so make sure you get rid of even the slightest sign of rust.

Maureen Gilmer: Welcome a new branch of olive

If you go back to the early days of our desert communities, certain trees were always planted. The first olive trees came from local orchards that were no longer commercially viable. The olive trees were dug up and moved to the desert as bare root, just as we move the date palms from Indio orchards into new development landscaping.
