To obtain all these features it pays to check out Bonsai soil that is particle based and which includes inorganic matter (properly structured) that promotes good water drainage and which also helps to aerate the soil.
On the other hand, compacted and organic Bonsai soil that is not well structured will not be able to provide proper aeration and the drainage too will be poor – all of which will lead to the roots fading away and the tree will easily rot and die. Without a doubt the right Bonsai soil must be free draining and must also have proper water retention abilities.
However, different kinds of Bonsais require their own particular types of Bonsai soil and so for Junipers and Pines there is need to use soil that does not need much water and this means that the soil need not have high water retention abilities.
On the other hand species of Bonsai that are of the flowering and also fruiting type will need higher water retention abilities and so the soil mix must have the ability to retain water and also allow for proper drainage.
