How Many Types Of Bonsai Trees Are There?

from:

Bald Cypress

Bald cypress bonsai trees grow very slow. However, they are still one of the most popular types of bonsai trees grown. They have light, feathery foliage and a gorgeous orange-brown coloring. They do well in a very wide range of soils and will even grow in places it wouldn’t naturally if you somehow give it proper drainage! It thrives in North American climates but are also common in Europe, Asia and elsewhere. They do best in climates where summers are very hot and they can grow well, but in places with colder summers, they still grow healthily, just more slowly. They are great a type of bonsai tree for beginners.

Okinawa Holly

Another popular type of bonsai tree is called the Okinawa Holly, which is a miniature version of the Holly. It produces tiny pink flowers in the spring and summer and is Native to the Northern Hemisphere. Its leaves are very small and glossy and, surprisingly, have serrated edges. They’re very hardy, beautiful and their size – somewhere between give and six inches tall by age four – makes them another great type of bonsai tree for beginning bonsai tree growers.

Snowbrush

The snowbrush, also known as the Snow on the Mountain, is another favorite type of bonsai tree. They have gorgeous leaves and coloring and they’re extremely unique trees as well because their leaves change depending on the kind of lighting they are exposed to. When allowed to grow in moderate light, the leaves grow very large and have white coloring to them. When they are grown in full sunlight, the leaves stay smaller and create a “denser” type of bonsai tree. The leaves end up with both white and pine coloring.

Shimpaku

The Shimpaku, also called the Chinese Juniper, is another good type of bonsai tree because they do well in many different bonsai soil types. It is also unique in that is it “dioecious” meaning it has both male and female plants. It grows in an unnatural mound shape as well. One of the main draws of this type of bonsai tree is that they have foliage all year around – green needles that are gorgeous to look at and very soft when you touch them!

Lavender Star

This unique type of bonsai tree is basically a compact evergreen tree. The flowers it produces are gorgeous lavender in color and reach an impressive 10 inches tall by year eight.
