Propagation Techniques of native plants
from:Since the civilization began humans always were on the look out for food as were other animals. Human beings were blessed with brain so they could think and that made them different than the animals. By using the ability to think man began to propagate the plants. Propagation of plants has now become a science. In order to propagate the native plants it is important to understand the physiology of plants. In this sense it is a science. You also need to know some basic techniques of nursery practice. Above all you need to have the innate understanding of the plant.
There are different methods of native plant propagation. You can propagate the native plants from seeds. Another way of propagation is in the nursery. Either container or bare root nursery. Vegetative propagation is yet another type of propagation.
Seed propagation is done either directly on the ground or in the nursery. The seed propagation is always less expensive as compared to vegetative propagation as the later requires special equipment structure and hand labor. You can grow plants in container nurseries or bare root nurseries. Container nurseries are more popular because you can follow a flexible schedule. The plants grow faster as well. The traditional method of direct seeding is used when you know where the plant should grow. You put the seed directly in the growth container and let it germinate. Another way to propagate the seed is to sow the seeds in a moist shallow tray. When the seedlings grow you can transplant them into the containers. You have to be very careful while transplanting the seedlings in order to not to harm the roots.
The vegetative method of propagation is a form of asexual reproduction. You make copies of the original plant. Some plants can be propagated with the root cuttings. You cut the stem treat the lower part for root growing and then stick them in the trays that are filled with growing material or you can stick them directly in the container. You can do the layering of the plant as well. You can insert a section of the root or stem which is still attached to the plant into the growing medium until the roots develop. Once the roots develop then you cut it from the main plant and transfer it to the container.
You have to have the feel and patience and correct equipment to be a successful propagator.
