ZZ Plant Propagation

from:

Zamioculcas zamiifolia is commonly referred to as the ZZ plant. It is ideal for growing indoors. This plant is drought resistant. Even if it is neglected it won’t suffer much. Low level of light, dryness in the air and insects can’t cause much harm to it. The ZZ plant will do well when there is a lot of sunlight available. Amount of watering should be optimum. However, it should be kept dry rather than wet. Excessive watering may cause the roots to rot. Very little fertilizer should be added. The growth of ZZ plant is usually very slow.

Plant propagation can be undertaken sexually as well as asexually. If seeds are available you can propagate the ZZ Plant through them. The female flowers remain fertile only till the pollen has been released. It becomes increasingly difficult to undertake pollination when there is just one plant. Conserved or frozen pollen can be used. On the other hand, asexual propagation can also be undertaken for the ZZ plant. This is referred to as vegetative propagation. Sometimes, an entire leaf of the plant is broken. The broken leaf should be placed in a pot. These leaves produce roots and a tuber. The leaf turns brown and then dies. After this the new plant is produced.

The cuttings can also be put into plastic bags that are sealed. Transparent boxes can be used. The rooting medium that is used should be sterile. Propagation gets accelerated using this technique. The leaf could be placed into a water bottle. The leaf begins to swell near the base. Roots and tubers begin to grow. It is better if you take a jar with a big opening. This enables you to extract the leaf with the roots easily. A hammer won’t be needed in such a case.

Another method of propagation involves breaking the central vein of the leaflet. The cutting should be done below the middle. The top should remain in contact with the main leaf. This ensures proper supply of nutrients. A tuber develops from the part where the cutting has been done. After sometime the cutting will become dry. At this moment, the tuber should be placed in the pot. Here it will begin to produce roots. Hence, using these methods the Zamioculcas zamiifolia plant propagation can be undertaken.
