Vegetative plant propagation.

from:

In the nature propagation of plants take place in two ways namely sexually and asexually. Sexual reproduction takes place through seeds. Asexual reproduction is a type of reproduction technique, which results in the formation of new individuals from the cells of a single parent. Asexual or vegetative reproduction is advantageous in case of some plants, which cannot be grown into offspring from their seed stage. It can take a very long time for some shrubs and trees to raise from the seed stage. In addition, the newly generated species may not have the same characteristics, as the parent plant. Vegetative propagation is the type of reproduction that is generally found in plants. This is also called as vegetative reproduction or vegetative multiplication. This type of reproduction is found only in plants. It is very rare in case of animals. In this type of propagation the new individuals are generated without the production of seeds and spores.
This type of natural vegetative reproduction is mostly found in herbaceous and woody perennials. The vegetative propagation characteristically involves the structural modifications of the stem. The underground parts of the plant such as the root also contribute to the vegetative reproduction of the plants. In addition to the stem and roots there are some species in which leaves also contribute to the propagation.
There are three different types of vegetative propagation namely grafting, Air layering and the use of cuttings. These types are also called as macro- propagation or tissue culture. Out of the above three methods the vegetative propagation that takes place with the help of cutting is the most cheapest and convenient. Air layering is the method of vegetative propagation in which root formation is initiated before the new plant part is separated from the mother tree. Grafting is the type of vegetative propagation in which the shoot of the desired plant is joined with the root of the other plant with a different genetic origin.
But in true sense this process is not reproduction. Really speaking it is a process of survival and expansion of the of the biomass of the individual species. When the plants or a species increases in size by means of cell multiplication and try to remain intact with one another than it is called the vegetative growth. But the new growth of these vegetative plants is considered as a new individual. These new plants are new beings except their genetics.
