Three methods of plant propagation

from:

Propagation is one of the most popular and easiest methods to grow plants. This works on the totipotency principle. Thus you can have a genetic replica of any unique or rare plant without causing any harm to the parent plant.

Cutting
Cutting is a method of plant propagation in which the plants are forced top produce roots from cut sections of the donor plants roots, stems or leaves. Herbaceous plants are grown in this manner and so are woody plants. This method requires a good medium to grow the cuttings. An ideal medium is one, which can hold water and be coarse enough for good air circulation. You can have a mixture of peat moss and sand or even perlite or vermiculite. The second thing you need is rooting hormones. For rooting you have to make angle cuts beneath the leaf nodes. Before you plant the cutting see to it that the soil is moist. After you plant the cutting in the medium, water it regularly and provide enough sunlight, it will grow in an adult plant. Remember that immediately after the cutting is done it should be planted to prevent it from embulizing and dying.

Division-
This method is ideal to grow perennial and house plants and also rosette-type leaves. In this method you have to remove the entire root system of a plant and make 3 to 4 lumps by mincing it. Make use of a clean sharp knife or blade. Immediately after doing this you need to plant it. The soil should be kept moist atleast for a couple of months. The season of division depends on the particular plants. If it is a spring plant division should be done in fall and a fall plant should under go division in spring. If you have houseplants go for the division before the growing season begins. Some examples are caladiums, ornamental grasses, daylilies etc.

Air layering
This method of plant propagation is meant for tropical plants like dracenas, weeping figs or even philodendrons. If you are going for air layering of tropical plants, it should be just before the growing season begins. You need to make a superficial cut of about ¼ of the stems diameter. You should put sphagnum moss near the cut end. Take a plastic bag and fill it up with moss. Wrap this plastic bag around the cut stem. Seal the ends of the plastic bags with cello tapes. You should see to it that the moss is always moist and does not dry up. You will see roots emerging after one or two months. Thereafter you can separate this plant from the original plant. This can be done by cutting below the new root mass. Since roots have an affinity for darkness, you can sue black or dark plastic.
