Using Division for Plant Propagation

from:

In case of landscape plants, there is no stem or crown. The technique used for propagation of such plants is called as division. But there are a number of plants which have several stems. Division can be used as a method for plant propagation for them too. There are various perennial flowers that can be propagated by this. Other plants are Mums, Ornamental Grasses, Hostas, etc.

The method of ‘division’ literally means dividing the plants. The parent plant that has to be reproduced has to be divided in this method. It can be divided into any number of parts. The number of divisions depends upon the size of the parent plant which has to be reproduced. At times, only a few divisions are made of the parent plant. This will retain the original size. The removal of the parent plant from the soil is not at all necessary if you wish to maintain the same size of the plant. You will need to clean the location around the plant to be able to see which parts of the parent plant to remove. A spade can be used to make the necessary divisions. You can trim the roots of the division. After that, choose an appropriate location to replant.

An appropriate time for the process of division would be during spring. Late fall can be another option. The parent plant needs to be dormant for plant propagation by division. So, you should take note of the dormancy season. For example, deciduous plants can be propagated by division only during the period of the dormancy season. Even for evergreen plants, the same case applies.

The specific process of plant propagation by division consists of digging out the main plant. It is better if one large clump of the plant is extracted. This should be put on the surface of a ground and many pieces should be cut out by the means of a spade or a knife. There ought to be sprouts in each division. The divisions are then replanted. Care should be taken that they don’t get soaked. Watering should be optimum. This method can be used only for certain plants. So, if you choose this method, make sure that it is appropriate for the plant propagation.
