Plant Propagation by Stem tip cutting

from:

Most popular method for plant propagation for the amateur gardener with most success is Stem Cutting. For stem tip cutting you will need the rooting hormones, continuous moisture or misting, light and necessary temperature.

To do the stem tip cutting propagation you should cut the section from an un-branched stem. Approximately the length should be 6 inches below the leaf axil. You should remove the 2/3 of the leaves and dip the barren base into the rooting hormone and place it in the mixture of a very porous peat and sand mixture. You should always keep the cutting moist. Keep the cutting enclosed so that the moisture level is constant. If you enclosed the cutting from time to time you have to air the cutting. It is very important to aerate the cutting. You should keep the cutting away from the direct sun light. It will harm the cutting. There should not be any condition that will produce stress for the cutting. In order to be successful in stem tip gutting propagation you could use an old fish aquarium with a glass cover. You should check your cuttings periodically. You should be very careful when you look for the rooting. You should remove the cutting only when you find fibrous feeder roots. You should put the cuttings in a loose but organic potting soil. This stimulates the root development. You should keep the cutting moist and put it in shaded area as to reduce stress.

The above mentioned steps are representative. The rooting period will vary. The type of plant you want to propagate, the time it will take to root, the kind of root growing hormone you will need and the time of the year is very critical and very plant specific. Normally herbaceous plants roots very quickly and easily. The woody plants take much longer and they need stronger rooting hormones. The time of the year is very critical for the woody plants to propagate. You can use either herbaceous, semi-hardwood or hard wood conditions to root the cuttings depending on the specific plant.

There is no Japanese bonsai or pebble garden and no fish pond brimming with koi to reflect the moon. There is a clearly well-used, typical urban SA braai out back on the patio, from which you look out over a typically suburban kikuyu lawn.
