Plant Propagation of Umbrella Plant
from:The umbrella plant is also known by the name of umbrella palm and umbrella sedge. The umbrella plant is basically a species of the sedge plant. Its outward look is highly similar to grass. This plant is a native of the eastern coast of Africa. However, this plant has been widely distributed in the tropical regions. And now, it is found naturally in regions of the West Indies and in some areas of South America. The names of all the species of this particular plant contain the word umbrella. The umbrella plant is found in the marshy land, in the ponds and in streams. In its native regions it is a perennial plant. However, in areas where the temperature reaches freezing point, it is an annual plant or an indoor plant.
There are three different methods of plant propagation for the umbrella plant. In the first place, umbrella plant can be propagated through seeds. The seeds of the umbrella plant should be sown in soil with a lot of moisture. The roots should be placed in such a way that they are above the level of water. Typically, the roots should be some inches above the level of water. This is the sexual propagation of the umbrella plant. The asexual propagation of the umbrella plant can be done by using two methods. It can be done either by cuttings or division.
The method of vegetative reproduction of umbrella plant is very different compared to the other plants. The stems of the umbrella plant aren’t very strong. When you put even a little bit of pressure, these stems can bend downwards. Due to this, the apex of the stem as well as the leaves may get immersed in water. Moreover, the stem and leaves may come in contact with the soil. When this happens, the stem produces more roots. These roots shoot out from under the leaves. In this way, a new plant is created.
This process can be replicated at home. You can cut the whole stem from the plant and remove the tips of the leaves. You can reduce the stem so that it can be managed properly. The remaining plant should be immersed in a glass of water upside down. After the roots come out, the plant can be placed into a plant. A saucer filled with water should be put under the pot. In this manner, the propagation of umbrella plant can be undertaken.
