Importance of Micro-propagation to Plant Propagation

from:

Micro-propagation refers to the method by which there is a rapid increase in the plant material that is stocked. This is done to increase the number of the progeny plants. An advanced method of tissue culture is used for micro-propagation. Thus, the method of micro-propagation is used to augment the number of new plants. These plants have either been modified genetically or they are bred by using certain traditional methods of plant breeding.

Micro-propagation is used to supply an adequate amount of small plants which can be used for planting. It’s usually used when the stock plant is unable to produce any seeds. Sometimes, it’s used when vegetative reproduction can’t be undertaken. The process of micro-propagation involves certain steps. First, the tissue needs to be established. After the plant tissue begins to grow well, establishment should be done again. Then there is the stage of pre-transplanting. Following this, the plant is transferred into the soil. Potting compost can also be used instead of soil. The last two stages are often clubbed together.

There are several reasons why micro-propagation is considered important to the method of plant propagation. The plants that are produced through the process of micro-propagation are free from all sorts of diseases. The small plants that are produced through micro-propagation have well developed roots. These new plants are all set for growing into mature plants. Other methods of plant propagation just produce seeds or even cuttings. Hence, micro-propagation is considered better. The reproductive capacity of plants that are produced through micro-propagation is extremely high. Propagules amounting to about a thousand are produced in the same amount of time that is required to produce about a hundred Propagules using a traditional method.

This is one of the most practical methods that can be used. This method is used especially when cells that have been genetically modified have to be regenerated. Regeneration using protoplast fusion is done using the method of micro-propagation. There are some plants that produce very less quantity of seeds. Hence, producing such plants becomes too costly. In case of these plants, micro-propagation should definitely be used. If you want your plants to become very strong and sturdy micro-propagation ought to be used. The rate of growth is exceedingly fast in comparison with other plants. Thus, the method of micro-propagation is highly important.
